Hermann’s History & Community

Hermann’s unique history, characterized by its blend of German and American cultures, has been the foundation for today’s prosperity. This history is evident in the town’s architecture, traditions, and community spirit, making it a fascinating place to visit or settle in.

The town of Hermann was founded in Philadelphia, PA, in 1836 by a group of progressive German Americans who shared an idea for a place in the sun.  They wanted a community where the German and American cultures could blend and thrive.  Maintaining the German language and practicing their homeland culture was essential, emphasizing the arts and philosophies.  Their desire for the freedoms that Americans held to was great.  They wanted to raise their children to speak German and English and to know and practice the cultural notes of their Germanic roots.

The early inhabitants faced significant challenges as this beautiful spot along the Missouri River was still a wilderness. However, they saw the potential and dreamed that Hermann would one day equal or surpass Philadelphia in economic power and grandeur. Their perseverance and determination, despite the odds, are truly inspiring.  That is why Hermann’s Market Street is 10 feet wider than its namesake in Philadelphia.  Our forebearers were a mix of dreamers and realists.

Today, the largest industry in Hermann is tourism.  Those first settlers recognized the climate, soil, and river transportation as big assets for the production of wine.  The entire community put its faith in the grape. It paid off until prohibition came upon the land.  Prohibition and the nation’s anti-German tone took a death toll on Hermann’s economy and lifestyle. However, the community stuck together and pulled up their socks to keep afloat.  Times were tough, but principles and patience won out in the end.  It is said that Hermann became so poor the residents could not afford to build new homes or stores.  They had to continue to use the old brick buildings and patch and repair as they could afford.  This may be why Hermann has over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Buildings today.  Many of these old buildings are storefronts in our downtown historic district, and many homes have been beautifully restored for private residents and lodging facilities.

As it was in the early years, Hermann’s center of life revolved around family. This strong focus on family makes everyone feel welcomed and included.  What is suitable for the family is good for the community.  Quality housing, schools second to none, community-involved churches, and recreational opportunities for all ages are addressed. Still, foremost, there is the need for quality, good-paying jobs for adults and teens as they learn to enter the workforce.  The town embraces these stabilizing tenets and continues to reach out to help local businesses build upon their successes and encourage new development.

Hermann Today

Hermann continues to enjoy a low crime rate, providing a safe environment for residents and businesses.  Our police force, led by a vigilant chief, not only enforces the laws but also develops strong community relations. They keep a watchful eye on the needs of our residents and can help direct them to the right resources, fostering a sense of security and community in Hermann.

The low cost of living in Hermann has remained stable.   Residents communicate with city and county representatives to identify possibilities for growth or improvement.  After all, it benefits everyone to realize growth and economic stability.

Residents are encouraged to explore their off-work time with hobbies, games, and sports.  A new state-of-the-art library offers programs for all ages.  A sizeable senior center provides hot, nutritious meals 5 days a week for a nominal fee to area senior residents.  The center’s bottom floor is a monthly membership gym open to the entire community.   It features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, personal trainers, and classes for advanced and first-timers.

Hermann Area District Hospital (HADH) opened its doors in 1966.  A small rural hospital is a rarity in this day of big hospital mergers and closures. Still, HADH offers a 24-hour, staffed ER, surgery services, various clinics, skilled care, and a large physical therapy department.
